Following the success of “art from berlin”, at which Berlin galleries jointly presented works of art at the Korea International Art Fair (KIAF) in May of 2007, the Galleries Association of Berlin and Gewerbesiedlungs-Gesellschaft (ORCO-GSG) initiated the “artist in residence program Seoul-Berlin” in September of 2008.
The Korean artists worked and lived in studios and apartments in various historical buildings in Berlin-Kreuzberg owned by Gewerbesiedlungs-Gesellschaft. The galleries participating at this year’s KIAF in September
Galerie Berlin | Galerie Deschler | D N A | LEO.COPPI | TAMMEN Galerie,
sponsored the artists. As a form of entering into a dialogue with the works of art by modern Korean artists, works by the artists represented by the sponsoring galleries,
HESSE, Tobias | MEHLER, Herbert | TERADA, Yukiko | WEYER, Silke
will be complementing this exhibition
The artist in residence program intends to expand the artistic exchange between the metropolitan cities Seoul and Berlin, who share the experience of being a part of divided nations, and to promote their relations in terms of the cultural economy. It formed an official part of KIAF 2008 and is to be continued next year in cooperation with the Galleries Association of Korea.
By this program, Landesverband Berliner Galerien (LVBG, Galleries Association of Berlin) and Gewerbesiedlungs-Gesellschaft (ORCO-GSG) are picking up on the long-standing tradition in the GSG courtyards, where many studios and galleries are located, of promoting the arts in economic terms.
